Improving the Quality of Life Through Art

Thanks to the generous support of members like you, Gadsden Arts brought the “magic of art” to 18,915 participants last year - sharing the beauty, intrigue, challenge, insight, understanding, emotion, depth of thought, and sense of achievement that art experiences offer. This overview of giving programs throughout the year is designed to help you select your favorite ways to bring art to people through Gadsden Arts. Thank you to all of you who have already renewed memberships or contributed through the 2017 Annual Fund, giving our programming a strong start for again this year!

If you have questions, would like to volunteer, or make a gift once this year to multiple giving programs, contact Grace Robinson (850) 627-5020, email grace@gadsdenarts.org, or stop by Gadsden Arts

Annual Fund 2017

Improving the quality of life in our community through art.

The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum is entering its 21st year as a community service organization. It is small in physical size and staff in comparison to many museums, but its buildings, programs, and staff rival the quality of those found anywhere. The source of the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum’s strength is that the organization is truly community-owned and community-driven. Widespread support carries Gadsden Arts forward and comes in the form of participation, membership, monetary contributions, corporate service contributions, volunteer time (2,722 hours last year), expertise, and talent.

We hope you will contribute to the Annual Fund to help sustain the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum's programming and help us bring the “magic of art” to the people in our community.

Opening Reception
Florida's First Highwaymen

Friday July 14, 2017 6-9pm

Florida’s First Highwaymen is an exhibition featuring the artists who first began the group later identified as “Highwaymen”. The story of how an established, popular, white landscape painter A.E. "Bean" Backus taught three young black men, Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, and James Gibson, to paint in Fort Pierce, Florida, in the late 1950's and early 1960’s, and the impact socially and culturally. Those artists met and taught others to paint in the core group, some of whom also studied with Backus, including Mary Ann Carroll, Sam Newton and George Buckner. At that time, black artists were not permitted to exhibit and sell work in galleries, nor were they represented in any museum - even the art of landscape painting itself was seen as a "white" venture at the time. Yet these young painters learned to paint landscapes and earned a living selling paintings along roadsides, in private homes, and parking lots. Gadsden Arts is borrowing work from the Backus Museum, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Vero Beach Museum of Art, and private collections. Programming will include guided tours and a lecture from the Director of the Backus Museum about the importance of Bean Backus to these young painters.
